CPN-UML Politburo Meeting Begins Under PM Oli’s

The Politburo meeting of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), or CPN-UML, has commenced at the party headquarters in Chyasal, Lalitpur. The meeting is being chaired by Prime Minister and party chairman KP Sharma Oli, according to Rajendra Gautam, Chief of the party’s Publicity Department.

During today’s session, Politburo members will continue to present their views on the party statute amendment proposal submitted by Vice-Chairman Bishnu Prasad Paudel. Gautam informed that those members who were scheduled to speak but could not do so on Friday will express their opinions today. On Friday, seven Politburo members had already shared their views regarding the amendment.

The proposed amendment seeks to remove the age limit of 70 years and the two-term limit outlined in Article 64 of the party’s 2078 statute revision. Additionally, the proposal outlines a leadership structure with 15 office bearers and a central committee of 251 members. It also retains a three-tier structure comprising the Standing Committee, Politburo, and Central Committee.

Gautam also mentioned that the proposal includes recognizing the number of office bearers as the Standing Committee, shifting from the previous practice of identifying them as Secretariat members.

Today’s meeting is scheduled to conclude with a focus on finalizing the preparations for the party’s upcoming Statute Convention, which will be held from Bhadra 20 to 22 (September 5–7) at the Sunrise International Convention Centre in Godawari, Lalitpur.
