Floods and Landslides Disrupt Major Highways in Eastern Nepal

Heavy and continuous rainfall has triggered floods and landslides in eastern Nepal, blocking several major highways including the Tamor Corridor, Mechi Highway, and the Mid-Hill Highway, causing severe disruption to transportation and supply services.

According to the District Police Office of Panchthar, traffic movement has been completely halted since early Sunday morning at key locations such as Hewa Khola on the Mechi Highway, Rijal Bhir and Dobhane Khola on the Mid-Hill Highway, and Nawa Khola section on the Tamor Corridor. Additionally, major routes including Ranke–Rabi–Bhedetar and Phidim–Phalaut have been closed due to the damage caused by floodwaters and landslides.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kaushal Kumar Budhathoki informed that the Mechi Highway was blocked at Hewa Khola since midnight after floodwaters washed over the diversion. The continuous rain since Saturday evening intensified the situation.

Similarly, the Tamor Corridor road connecting Panchthar and Dhankuta districts has been rendered impassable due to flooding at the Nawa Khola. The road connecting Ranke–Rabi through Budhabare to Bhedetar in Dhankuta has also been closed.

A landslide at Rijal Bhir on the Panchthar section of the Mid-Hill Highway has blocked the road, and flood damage at the Dobhane Khola diversion further worsened the situation. Diversions at Feme Khola and Muwa Khola on the Phidim–Phalaut stretch have also been buried, making vehicle movement impossible.

The District Administration Office, Panchthar, has issued a public notice urging all residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during this hazardous period.
