The Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have decided to withdraw from the Madhesh Province government. The move comes amid dissatisfaction over Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh of the Janamat Party refusing to relinquish power, despite completing a year in office.
Janamat Party, currently the fourth-largest party in the 107-member Provincial Assembly, continues to lead the government. Meanwhile, the CPN-UML is the largest party in the province with 25 seats, followed by the Nepali Congress with 22 seats. The Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal holds 19 seats, and the Janamat Party has 13.
Additionally, the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party have 9 seats each, CPN (Unified Socialist) has 7, while Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Nepal Sanghiya Samajwadi Party, and Nepal Unmukti Party each hold 1 seat.
A minimum of 54 seats is required to form a majority in the Madhesh Provincial Assembly. However, even a coalition between the Congress and UML falls short of the required number, leaving the province’s political future uncertain.
