The Police Headquarters has issued a circular to all police offices across the country instructing them not to release or share photos and videos of individuals arrested in any incident or crime.
Deputy Inspector General Vinod Ghimire, the central spokesperson for Nepal Police, informed that during press conferences or while sharing any information, police units nationwide have been directed to refrain from publicizing or distributing images and videos of arrested persons.
This directive follows instructions from the Office of the Attorney General, which advised the Police Headquarters not to release such photos and videos. Based on this guidance, the Police Headquarters circulated the order to all subordinate units.
The decision from the Attorney General’s Office was made earlier this Ashad month (mid-June to mid-July). Upon receiving this directive, the Police Headquarters promptly issued the circular for immediate implementation.
Spokesperson Ghimire added that in cases involving heinous crimes or where withholding such media could negatively impact the state or society, the photos or videos may be released only with permission from the concerned authorities.
