21 Congress Lawmakers File No-Confidence Motion Against Bagmati Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama

Bagmati Province — A no-confidence motion has been registered against Bagmati Province Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama at the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party office, signed by 21 members of the Provincial Assembly.

According to Party Secretary Krishna Tamang, the lawmakers submitted the motion with signatures citing CM Lama’s failure to meet public expectations. Earlier today, four ministers from the Congress party — Suraj Chandra Lamichhane, Min Krishna Maharjan, Bimal Thakuri, and Madu Kumar Shrestha — resigned from their positions before the motion was filed.

The Nepali Congress has 37 members in the provincial assembly, requiring 19 votes to elect a new parliamentary party leader. The majority of members have now signed the no-confidence motion. Previously, Lama had defeated Indra Baniya to become the parliamentary party leader, securing 21 votes against Baniya’s 16.

Indra Baniya, who leads the faction seeking leadership change, said the process to select a new leader has begun and will be finalized within a few days. “The party leader failed to maintain the trust of the majority of lawmakers who once supported him,” Baniya stated.

The decision follows internal disputes over the provincial government’s budget for fiscal year 2082/83, which created significant rifts within the Congress party. With the party’s rules stipulating that the parliamentary party leader also serves as Chief Minister, the no-confidence motion aims to remove Lama from both positions.
