Former Gandaki Province Chief Prithvi Man Gurung to be Cremated at Devghat Today

Former Gandaki Province Chief Prithvi Man Gurung, who passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 76, will be cremated today at Devghat with full religious rites. Gurung, known as a dignified and principled leader, died at 8:00 AM at his residence in Bharatpur Metropolitan City–26, Dibyanagar, after a prolonged battle with stomach cancer.

According to Dhruvraj Pokhrel, Secretary of Nepali Congress Chitwan, Gurung’s mortal remains will be kept at his residence until 10:30 AM for final tributes. The funeral procession will begin from his Dibyanagar residence and proceed to the Nepali Congress Party Office in Narayangarh, where the body will be kept for some time for party members and well-wishers to pay their last respects. The cremation will take place at 11:30 AM at Devghat, following religious rituals.

Nepali Congress Vice-President Dhanraj Gurung will be arriving in Chitwan to attend the funeral and pay tribute to the late leader. Gurung was appointed as the Chief of Gandaki Province on September 12, 2021, by then-President Bidya Devi Bhandari and served in the position for nearly 32 months. He left office on March 12, 2024, following a change in government.

During his tenure, Gurung was widely recognized as a non-controversial and inclusive leader, passing more than a dozen laws during his two and a half years in office. Prior to this role, he served as the president of Nepali Congress (Democratic) Chitwan during the party split and chaired the Squatter Problem Commission in Nawalparasi, helping provide land ownership to many squatters.

Gurung was also the nephew of Hariprasad Gurung, who was martyred during the Chitwan Movement of 1961 (2018 B.S.).
