NHRC Expresses Concern Over Government’s Decision to Shut Down Unregistered Social Media Platforms

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concern over the government’s decision to block unregistered social media platforms. The commission stated that such a move would not only affect users but also go against the essence of democratic governance and human rights values.

According to the NHRC, it is the government’s responsibility to legally register, list, or regulate service providers before allowing them to operate. However, shutting down long-running platforms that have become an integral part of communication and expression for Nepalis, under the pretext of regulation, has negatively impacted the public.

The commission urged the government to reconsider its decision after assessing its impact on citizens and to adopt alternative measures for regulation and management of social media platforms.
