Former PM Baburam Bhattarai Calls for Citizenship and Voting Age to Be Set at 16

Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has stated that the age for obtaining citizenship and the age for voting should be the same.

Expressing his views through social media, Bhattarai urged the government and the Election Commission to adopt appropriate measures and set both the citizenship and voting age at 16 years.

Following the Gen Z movement, he also suggested that the minimum age to contest in the upcoming election on Falgun 19 should be reduced from 25 to 18 years—or at least 21 years. He warned that failing to do so would make the upcoming election irrelevant for the young leaders who spearheaded the recent historic movement.

Bhattarai emphasized that the young generation should lead the nation through the electoral process. He also urged all eligible citizens, both inside and outside Nepal, to register their names in the voter list on time, and appealed to prevent the repetition of old political cycles in Nepali politics.
