Prime Minister Sushila Karki Emphasizes Policy Reforms for Safe, Transparent, and Dignified Foreign Employment

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stated that policy reforms are essential to make foreign employment safe, transparent, and dignified.

Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu on Tuesday to mark the 18th anniversary of the Foreign Employment Board, she said the government is also serious about making foreign employment free of cost.

Prime Minister Karki mentioned that the government is working to make workers skilled and competent before they go abroad for employment, adding, “We have adopted a policy to encourage workers to invest their earnings, skills, technology, and experience gained abroad into productive sectors within the country.”

As the Minister for Labor, Employment, and Social Security as well, Prime Minister Karki instructed the Board to ensure the reintegration, dignified participation, and social security of returnee migrant workers.

She noted that the ‘Call Center’ and ‘Telemedicine Service’ initiated by the Board to address issues in foreign employment have proven useful, and praised the efforts to make all welfare services available through an online system.

Prime Minister Karki further stressed the need to prioritize the creation of decent employment opportunities within the country as an alternative to foreign employment and to expand skill-based enterprises. For this purpose, she directed the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security to prepare and implement an action plan.
