Nine political parties and groups, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist), are set to officially announce their unification today. The parties will hold a mass gathering at Bhrikutimandap at 1 PM this afternoon to declare the merger.
The unification involves the Maoist Centre, Unified Socialist, Janata Samajbadi Party, Nepal Samajbadi Party, a faction of the CPN that split from Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav), CPN Samajbadi, CPN Maoist Samajbadi, and CPN Samyabadi. Gopal Kiranti has also joined the unification along with the Maoist Centre.
The newly unified party will be named the Nepali Communist Party, and the participating groups have agreed to adopt the five-pointed star as their election symbol. On Tuesday, the Maoist Centre’s Convention Organizing Committee had already passed the proposal related to party unification.
However, some senior leaders have decided not to join the merger. From the Maoist Centre, leaders such as Janardan Sharma and Ram Karki have opted out and announced a separate campaign. Similarly, from the Unified Socialist, former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, and Ram Kumari Jhakri have also chosen to stay out of the unification process.
