The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government, political parties, activists, and the general public to refrain from making statements or engaging in activities that could affect peace and security in the country.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel called for seriousness regarding freedom of expression and matters of peace and security.
The statement reads, “Arresting anyone solely for their thoughts or expressions does not uphold or protect human rights. The Commission directs the Government of Nepal to take this matter seriously. The Commission also urges political parties, activists, and citizens not to engage in expressions or activities that could harm national peace and security.”
Regarding the arrest of activist Durga Prasai, the NHRC stated that it had monitored the incident. A team from the Commission reached the Kathmandu District Police Range, Bhadra Kali, met Prasai and relevant police officials, and gathered information.
According to the NHRC, Prasai was arrested from his residence in Sano Thimi, Bhaktapur, at 12:30 AM today, and is currently held in police custody at the Kathmandu District Police Range. As per the police report, he was arrested for investigation under charges related to public peace and security. The Commission also confirmed that his health condition is normal.
